Today I have switch my home network to Unifi. I’ve been wanting to do this for a while as we have one at work and I admire the hardware and software of the devices.
We have an Express 7 at work that manages the network in our office and we also have a VPN on there so we can lock servers down to our IP address.
I finally bit the bullet and got a UDR7 for my office in the attic and a U7 Lite access point for the ground floor.
Set up was super simple using the Unifi app on iOS and I was up and running within 30 minutes. I used the same WIfi SSID and password so everything just connected. I added the U7 Lite access point downstairs and clicked adopt in the system and that was it.
The access point is powered over ethernet as well so there’s less wiring in the living room. I mentioned to Kelly that we could mount it on the ceiling but as expected she didn’t seem keen.
I miscounted how many ports I needed on the router and thought I’d get away with not having an additional network switch but unfortunately we have to keep it.
The FritzBox that my ISP provided is confined to a box along with the Deco Mesh network I was using.
Speed tests so far are much faster than before the switch so really happy with it. I’ve already started looking at Unifi cameras.
